Building on Experience and Teamwork
Praggnanandhaa, one of the stars of the men’s team, reflected on the progress made since the last Olympiad, held in Chennai in 2022. Back then, India came close to winning gold but settled for bronze. This time, the team leveraged their experience, played with determination, and secured gold. Srinath, the men's team captain, highlighted that their journey to victory was smooth, with India winning 10 matches and drawing only one. The women's team, though facing challenges with a loss to Poland and a draw with the United States, made a strong comeback with key victories over China and Azerbaijan in the final rounds. Their performance underscored the strength and resilience of Indian chess players, who rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
The Gaprindashvili Trophy and What Lies Ahead
India’s combined victory also earned them the prestigious Gaprindashvili Trophy, awarded to the nation with the best performance across both the open and women's divisions.
