Cyclone Dana Approached India's East Coast
Cyclone Dana, a severe cyclonic storm, is expected to hit the coastal regions of Odisha between October 23 and 25, 2024. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in districts like Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, and Jagatsinghpur during this period, with wind speeds ranging from 100 to 120 km/h.
The cyclone is predicted to make landfall between Puri and Sagar Island on the night of October 24 or early morning on October 25. In response, the Odisha government has taken extensive precautionary measures, including the closure of schools in 14 districts and evacuations in vulnerable areas. Fishermen have been advised to stay off the sea, and tourists in coastal regions have been urged to leave. Emergency teams, including the NDRF and ODRAF, have been deployed to manage the situation and prevent loss of life.
The state's "zero casualty" policy is in full effect, with shelters prepared and stocked with food, water, and medical supplies to assist those affected. Coastal transportation has also been disrupted, with numerous trains canceled and road connectivity likely to suffer during the cyclone's peak.
In preparation, the Odisha government has evacuated vulnerable coastal communities and deployed disaster relief forces. Schools in affected districts have been closed, and fishermen are advised to stay off the sea. Major disruptions to transport are already in effect, with over 200 trains canceled, and flights to Bhubaneswar and Kolkata have been suspended.
