आकाश में या जमीन पर पंख: जेट एयरवेज वित्तीय संकट
India’s second largest private carrier, Jet Airways' ferry is highly precarious at the moment. All efforts of survival seems to go in vain as the Airline is under the obligation of halting all its flight operation temporarily from Wednesday(April 16) evening. A final SOS sent to banks for emergency fund releasing of Rs. 200 crore on Tuesday(April 15) by Jet’s CEO Vinay Dubey also got rejected.
Organization under lenders control
· Lenders are expressing lack of confidence in cash ravenous Jet Airways and hence forcing main management of Airlines to resign one by one. Rajshree Pal resigns as an independent director. Naresh Goyal, founder of Jet Airways has been forced to step down as chAirman last month. Airline is under the management control of SBI led consortium of lenders approved by its board last month.
· As per The Economic times, some of the lenders want Goyal to pledge more of his shares along with Airline’s plane as security for further loan. Goyal who holds 51% stake in the Airline, has already pledged 41.1% to the banks on condition of immediate releasing of loan fund. It’s uncertain whether banks look for entire shareholding, but Goyal want to retain his 9.9% stake. Goyal had submitted his Expression of interest( EOI) as part of consortium on April 12. But again he has been pressurized to withdraw from bidding as Etihad (24% stake, second largest stakeholder) and TPG Capital threatened to cancel their proposals.
· Jet’s lenders are attempting to find a new investor to take a stake of up to 75 percent in the Airline. Many units have submitted expressions of interest (EoI), including Etihad Airways Airways ,TPG Capital and Indigo Partners. Goyal's general sales agency (GSA), JetAir Pvt Ltd, submitted an initial bid, too, as part of a consortium that includes two little-known foreign entities, Future Trend Capital and Adi Partners. Lenders have time to complete the selection of bidders by 7 May after SBI extended a deadline.
Begining of the Crisis:
· Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal decided to acquire Air Sahara in 2006 for $500 million in cash despite being advised by advisors of paying too much for Air Sahara. This decision troubled the Airline for years and later with additional costs, taxes as well as legal and manpower issues.
· Aspiring for extending business on international routes jet purchased 22 wide body Aircraft 3 years ago which caused huge cash depletion. It faced its first major crisis in 2011-12 and eventually sold 24% stake to Etihad for $379 million in 2013.
· In order to compete with low cost carriers SpiceJet and Indigo, Jet lowered its fare price without reducing it’s expensive services. Hike in global crude prices might have also been responsible for its current situation. The situation got worse from the declining rupee.
· Tremendous crisis started in March 2018 with delayed salary payments for employees and a 25% pay cut for top management. It upswing all of a sudden between January and March 2019 that Airline was under obligation to ground more than 100 planes.
Turbulent Situation
Consequently Airlines piled up with huge debt of over Rs. 8000 crore. Airline was expecting Rs. 1500 crore funding from the lenders who in turn would acquire a majority stake in the Airline. However it received only Rs. 200 crore in March end, which it has already spent on fuel costs, paying partial salaries and payment to vendors. Indian oil Corp has stopped fuel supply to cash strapped Airline. Hence, Airline has been forced to temporarily shutdown it’s flight operations on Wednesday evening ( April 17) with fleet size of 124 last November. It has also extended the cancellation of international operations till April month.
Faultless Airline staff suffering and Seeking Justice
Airline has not been able to pay salary to its employees since last three and half months. 1100 pilots who decided not to fly from Monday (April 15) in protests against non payment of salary dues now appealing to Prime minister Narendra Modi to help and save 20,000 jobs. Whole Airline staff gathered at the Airline’s headquarter to show solidarity to save Jet. At Delhi's IGI Airport also staff protested silently with “protest sign boards” on Saturday (April 13), insisting urgent release of their pending salaries. Along with salary deprivation, they are also facing humiliation by passengers over the cancellation of flights and ticket money refund.
Airline’s fates is all eyed upon some new investors interested in funding and help reviving Airline otherwise bidding day is not too far. Wish to call Jet Airways “is” not “was”.
